Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau says Fiji’s current fishing fleet cannot sustain the demand for albacore tuna in the country.
He says PAFCO has a capacity of 30,000 metric tonne but are only supplied 19,000 metric tonnes by fishing vessels unloading albacore tuna at the Suva Port.
Koroilavesau says to meet the demand, the Ministry is planning to get supplies from Kiribati and Tuvalu.
He says the Ministry is also in the process of identifying new fishing spots close to Viti Levu.
Meanwhile, Koroilavesau says that fishing vessels unloading fish at the Suva Port demand a higher price and if PAFCO is able to purchase fish at these prices, they will be able to meet the demand.
