A man who raped his stepdaughter has been sentenced to 15 years 11 months and 2 weeks imprisonment by the Lautoka High Court.
The incident happened in 2014 and at the time of the incident the man was 27 years old and the girl was 10 years old.
While sentencing the man, Acting High Court Judge, Justice Rangajeeva Wimalasena said the man took the advantage of the vulnerability of the complainant by reason of her age.
Justice Wimalasena says he observed premeditation in the man's actions as he chose occasions where the complainant’s mother was away from home.
The Acting Judge says as a result of this incident the complainant has been deprived of her right to be in the company of her mother and the siblings as she was relocated.
He says the victim impact statement reveals that the complainant is emotionally and psychologically disturbed as a result of what she had gone through.
The man can apply for parole after 11 years.
