A man has been jailed for 7 years, 10 months and 3 weeks for raping his 19-year-old neighbor during a drinking session in 2016 in a village in Lautoka.
He pleaded guilty on the date of the trial.
In his sentence, Acting Judge Rangajeeva Wimalasena said the woman was 19-years-old and the man was 39-years-old when the offence was committed.
It was heard in court that when the offence was committed the woman was drunk and asleep.
The Acting Judge said the woman was vulnerable due to alcohol and the man had no regard for the woman’s 14-year-old cousin who was lying next to her.
In mitigation, the court considered that the man was now 42-years-old and married with four children.
Justice Wimalasena said the man was supporting his 70-year-old sickly mother. The court has not set a non-parole period.
