Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says in the past, the quality of construction of teachers quarters was substandard and only the larger schools in urban areas were offering housing to their teaching staff which widens inequality.
Bainimarama highlighted this while opening a teachers quarters in Naboro Sawanikula Primary School in Naitasiri.
He says to add to this problem, the remote teachers allowances were a fraction of where it is today which meant there was less incentive for teachers to go and teach in communities like the Naboro Sawanikula Primary School.
Bainimarama has challenged all Fijian teachers to live up to the support that the government is providing for them.
He says the government will continue to provide support to the teachers and enable a conducive teaching environment in the country.
He says the ripple effect of quality education expands far and wide.
Bainimarama says when teachers are well rested and well prepared, that shows the energy they bring to their teaching which can inspire a life long passion for students to shape their future careers
The Prime Minister says he opened two other teachers quarters like this one last week and plans to open two more next week.
