Good news for boxers in Fiji as they will be able to use the newly renovated High Performance Captain Brown Boxing Gymnasium, which was opened today by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in Walu Bay.
Bainimarama says right on the heels of the major review comes yet another proud moment for the athletes in Fiji as he opened the newly renovated home for Boxing Fiji.
He says boxing grew to its golden age in Fiji under the eyes of Captain Brown experiencing high popularity in the 1970’s.
Bainimarama adds Harry Charman and Captain Brown founded Boxing Fiji in 1955 and with no time to waste immediately started training.
Bainimarama says the facility alone no matter how nice it looks will never throw a knockout punch as Gyms don't win medals.
He says Captain Brown’s legacy extends beyond his service as the first commander in the Fiji Navy making it a personal moment for him.
Meanwhile High Performance Development Chairman, Cairson Young says this initiative is in line with the 2020 – 2024 development plan.
Young says the idea is to have a solid calendar of events so that both coaches and boxers throughout the entire country can have their inter club and training schedules all in line.
He says this is very important for them in terms of having access to a boxing ring.
Young says this is essentially a high performance gym, where they will also try and monetise it in accepting regular customers.
