Nadal, had not dropped a set this tournament before 23rd seed Kyrgios provided his biggest test so far.
In a touching tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, Kyrgios entered Rod Laver Arena in a LA Lakers No.8 singlet, seemingly in tears, then used the NBA superstar's death as motivation to keep fighting to beat his bitter rival.
Nadal will face Austrian fifth seed Dominic Thiem in the last eight.
