A 23-year-old, Fijian home-stay student in New Zealand who stole his hosts underwear and secretly filmed her in the bathroom at least 40 times has been sentenced to 15 months in jail and is ordered to pay $200 for the pairs of underwear he stole.

It was heard in court that early last year, Josevata Hamilton Turagakula Raikoti imported several covert cameras from an unknown website.

However, Raikoti claimed the first time he had used the cameras in the bathroom was by accident but the judge totally rejected that proposition.

Raikoti would tape the camera to the inside of a bucket which he would then hide in a cupboard and point at the shower.

Raikoti admitted to police he had repeated that method more than 40 times.

Between February and May last year, Raikoti also stole at least five pairs of the victim's underwear.

Raikoti admitted it was all done for his sexual gratification.

In a statement to the court, the victim described the sense of absolute betrayal and disgust she felt.

The Judge said Raikoti was subject to a deportation order and he would either be returned to Fiji immediately or once his sentence had expired.
