Bail has been granted to the teacher who allegedly hit a 12-year-old boy with her vehicle while he was crossing at a zebra crossing with his cousins in front of Labasa Sangam Primary School.
Saleshni Lata Singh is charged with one count of dangerous driving and one count of dangerous driving causing a reckless and negligent act.
While speaking during the bail hearing, Singh’s counsel, Sheenal Naidu, argued that this is her first offence and that she should be granted bail.
Naidu says Singh is a school teacher and, with schools reopening next week, she needs to prepare herself.
She also says Singh did not run from the accident and was waiting for the police to question her.
Police Prosecutor Vignesh Prasad argued that Singh should not be granted bail as she could interfere with the witnesses.
Prasad says the teacher stopped the vehicle about 20 metres after hitting the boy.
He also says that every driver should be aware that between 2 and 4pm, students mostly cross the road, and drivers should be prepared to stop at zebra crossings.
Magistrate Amelia Vavadakua has ordered Singh to surrender her passport and driving licence.
Singh was granted bail with two sureties and a $700 non-cash bond.
The matter has been adjourned to the 3rd of October.
Meanwhile, the 12-year-old accident victim has been discharged from the CWM Hospital.
