The government is working with the Sugarcane Growers Council to clarify issues and implement decisions made in cabinet last week to dissolve the Council later this year.
Sugar Ministry Permanent Secretary, Parmesh Chand said the council has been informed about the decision as government has seen necessary to take this step for the benefit of the Sugar Industry.
However, Chairman for Growers Council, Jain Kumar raised concern on cabinet's decision saying they are unclear on which institution will represent the farmers once the council has been dissolved.
Kumar added that they are seeking a meeting with Sugar Minister, Commodore Vorege Bainimarama to clarify some issues.
The council was established in 1984.
