200 people are expected to get jobs as Tropik Wood Industries Fiji Ltd has successfully negotiated a joint venture agreement with a Korean Company GIMCO to export biomass chips to the global market.

The joint venture agreement will involve the export of biomass chips or pellets while it is also looking at expanding into rural gasification and Independent Power Production.

The Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said that the technological advantage possessed by GIMCO and the resources by Fiji Pine and its subsidiaries, the venture will also look at developing biomass gasification projects for rural Fiji.

Tropik Wood chairman Faiz Khan said that there is a demand for waste-wood fuel by GIMCO and Tropik Wood Industries is in a position to supply out of its Wairiki operations.

He said that GIMCO wants bark waste that is a by-product of wood chip processing and other forms of biomass fuel such as branches that are left behind immediately after harvesting.

GIMCO is expected to install the facilities in Fiji soon.
