It was a nail biting affair as top local sevens clubs, Red Rock, Wardens, Army and Samurai advanced into the semi finals of the Uprising Fiji International Sevens this afternoon.
Our rugby Commentator Malakai Veisamasama who is at the TFL stadium said there have been some impressive performances by the local players which even made NZ Coach Gordon Tietjens stand up and take notice.
Looking those results again, Red Rock defeated Navy 21 - 17, Wardens defeated Waisale Serevi's Digicel Matai side 5 - 0, Samurai defeated Police 7 - 5 and in the last quarterfinal, Jope Tuikabe's Army shut out the Samoan Barbarians 25 - 5 to advance into the last four.
All the experience in the Matai side could not help them win the scores and our rugby commentator Malakai Veisamasama believed some of the referees decisions should have gone the Matai's way.
It was not the result the rugby fans were expecting with high expectations that the Matai, featuring Serevi with NZ Gordon Tietjens on the sidelines would have progressed further in the tournament.
Despite losing out on semi finals spot, Samoan Barbarians coach Stephen Betham has hailed the tournament as a success and hoped to return with another team next year.
Red Rock will now face the Wardens in the first semi final at 2:45pm this afternoon, while Samurai takes on Army soon after.
You can catch the live commentary of the matches on our sister station Viti FM.
