Cancer in Fiji is the third leading cause of deaths, accounting to almost 10 percent of all deaths.

That was revealed at the launch of Bushells Fiji’s biggest morning tea by the Minister for Social Welfare and Women, Dr Jiko Luveni.

According to the statistics, Fiji has a cancer incidence of 192 per 100,000 according to the World Health Organization.

She said females have a high incidence rate, almost three times more than males which include cervical, breast and uterus.

She said among males, the main cancer sites over the past five years have been prostate, liver, colorectal and testes.

In 2010, the Ministry of Health made a concerted effort to document all cases of cancer in Fiji and are therefore able to record at least 80 percent of the cancer cases in Fiji in their data base.
