Parallel repairs are underway on the Labasa bridge due to a cracked deck and steel corrosion on its columns.
Fulton Hogan Highways Special Projects Manager Eddie de Vries says work on the two major issues would be completed by this month.
De Vries says the concrete columns supporting the bridge are bursting apart and the reinforcing steel in the concrete is corroding, making the concrete break off in flakes leaving a weakened column.
He says the deck is showing serious signs of fatigue or cracks.
He says most of the work will be done between peak traffic or at night and they will close off one lane at a time.
