Fiji has been ranked Level A in the International Society of Nephrology’s Sister Renal Centre Program.

Kidney Specialist Dr. Amrish Krishnan says the International Society of Nephrology's Sister Renal Centre Program is one of their global outreach programs aimed at advancing nephrology, which is the field of medicine involved in evaluating and treating kidney diseases, around the world.

Dr. Krishnan says in 2015 Fiji was at Level C of the program, and has made its way up to Level A.

He says Fiji has been running the Annual Fijian Nephrology Symposium every year since 2015, celebrating the World Kidney Day, improving the knowledge of local doctors on how to treat patients with kidney disease, and the recent announcement of the establishment of the National Kidney Research and Treatment Centre.

Dr. Krishnan says these are some factors the International Society of Nephrology would have considered in its decision to upgrade Fiji to Level A.

He says it is a reflection of the international communities recognition that there is gradual progress in Nephrology in Fiji.

Dr. Krishnan says he has been the local liaison for the program and a number of his local colleagues, nurses and even patients have contributed to the success of the program.
