The school manager of Gram Sangathan School in Buiduna, Nausori says they will have no choice but to close a four classroom building later this week if no work is carried out in relation to a major landslide two weeks ago.

Ravindra Prasad says continuos rain over the last few days has resulted in more landslides next to the school.

Prasad says he is contacting the Ministry of Education every day and getting a response that they will be coming soon, however no work has been carried out.

The Ministry of Education had confirmed to us earlier that they will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the contractor last week and work on building a retaining wall will start soon after the signing.

Prasad says this has not eventuated and there is a real threat to the lives of students and teachers.

We will be speaking to the Ministry of Education today.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Roads Authority had earlier advised the management of Gram Sangathan School to immediately address the landslide issue, as there is a risk of the school building collapsing.

FRA’s CEO Jonathan Moore had also requested the school manager to obtain the report from the Mineral Resources Department regarding the investigation on the vulnerability of the school during the rainy season and the continuous slipping of red clay from the compound.
