The opening of Makoi Health Centre new Maternity Unit on the 16th of this month will also see the first batch of retired midwives be re-engaged into the Ministry of Health.

This has been confirmed by the Minister for Health, Rosy Akbar who adds that the initial operating hours for the new Maternity Unit will be from 8am-4pm daily with plans in the pipeline to have a 24-hour operating health facility by early April.

Akbar has also highlighted that the Ministry of Health continues to look for midwives to employ in the different maternity units adding that the Health Ministry will be finalizing their recruitment process for midwives in March this year.

When questioned on whether there is an urgent need for midwives in other maternity units in health facilities around the country, the Health Minister says that she is not sure of the numbers to date, however the Ministry is working to re-engage retired midwives who she believes have the experience that is needed in the Ministry.

She says that the re-engaged midwives will also be part of the training of new nurses into midwifery.
