The Fijian Elections Office has made it clear that the Electoral Act does not define the election campaign period as claimed by SODELPA MP Mosese Bulitavu in a statement.

Bulitavu has made a call to the Supervisor of Elections and the Fiji Electoral Commission to determine the breach of the electoral laws by the FijiFirst Party and take action.

He says the FijiFirst is putting up large billboard displays to influence the voters in the upcoming elections of 2018.

The SODELPA parliamentarian then went on to say that this is a gross breach of the electoral laws which define the campaign period.

Bulitavu says the Electoral Commission must wake up on its job and issue orders for the removal of the billboard signs and institute action against the FijiFirst by referring the matter to FICAC.

Fijivillage can confirm that the Electoral Act only states that in the 48 hour period prior to polling day and on the polling day until the close of polling at all polling stations, it is strictly prohibited for any person to engage in any campaign, including any broadcast, advertisement or publication and distribution of any campaign material, display slogans, banners, posters, flags or colours of a political party or a candidate in the election.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem says it is expected that Bulitavu should obtain proper legal advice before making statements.

Saneem says as we proceed to the 2018 General Election, individuals and political parties must ensure that they read the law and at the same time get proper legal advice before making public statements.

He says the Elections Office will ensure that the voters are protected from unscrupulous activities such as this.
