The woman who was allegedly raped by a taxi driver in 2016 has told the Suva High Court that she was friends with the accused, 35-year-old Rajinesh Kamal Narayan.

The alleged incident happened on 13th September 2016 when the girl was 16 years old.

While taking the stand as the first prosecution witness, the woman said Narayan was like a brother to her but one day he told her that he is single and from that day they became friends.

She told the court that Narayan would pick her up in his taxi two or three times in a week and they would go to a restaurant and Suva Point.

When asked by the State Counsel Lavenia Bogitini on what they would do at Suva Point, the woman said they would sit and talk to each other.

The first prosecution witness said the accused asked her to be his girlfriend but the woman said they should only be friends.

The woman said she had told the accused that she does not want them to meet again because she does not want to break up his family after she found out that Narayan was married and had children.

It was heard in court that on the 13th of September, 2016 the woman and the accused went to Suva Point and the accused locked the doors of the taxi and started kissing the complainant.

The woman then asked the accused not to kiss her as it is not the right time to do it.

She said that she told him not to do it since he has a family and she is a small girl.

She said the accused pushed her down at the back of the taxi and then allegedly raped her.

The trial continues before High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo.
