The Fiji Rugby Union will be introducing eight provincial women’s rugby team in next year’s Skipper Cup competition.

This was highlighted by FRU CEO John O’Connor after the FRU Annual General Meeting in Suva yesterday.

O’Connor says they are actively looking for sponsorship to sponsor the local women’s rugby team as it will also allow FRU to start contracting women in tournaments like the Skipper Cup.

Meanwhile Mere Rakoroi the General Manager of Tanoa Plaza Hotel in Suva has been appointed by the Fiji Rugby Union as the first woman to join FRU’s board of Director.

O’Connor says Rakoroi’s role will be to look into the welfare of the women’s rugby team in Fiji considering the fact that women’s rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.
