A 49 year old man has been sentenced to 11 years and 10 and a half months of imprisonment after being convicted of a count each of rape and sexual assault by the Suva High Court.
The man who is the granduncle of the nine year old victim had raped and sexually assault her on 15th February 2016.
Judge Justice Riyaz Hamza stated that the society can not condone any form of sexual assault on children as they are the future.
He adds that the aggravating factor was that as the granduncle he should have protected the victim but instead he breached the trust of the victim.
Justice Hamza adds that the man exposed the young child's mind to sexual activity.
A non‑parole period of nine years and nine and a half months has been set.
