Attorney‑General Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum has received a cheque worth $1.7 million from Indian Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Ashwini Choubey.
These funds are part of the $10.3 million pledge made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Fiji in 2014.
Sayed-Khaiyum stated that it is ordinary Fijians and Indians that we need to assist on their day to day basic living.
He says by getting Fijians engaged in small and micro enterprises with $1000 they are able to give them a leg‑up.
He further stated the Government through micro‑finance has tremendously changed their lives, in a small but decisive manner.
This was done during the renaming ceremony of the Indian Culture Centre which is based in Suva.
The centre will now be known as Swami Vivekananda Centre.
