England soccer manager, Gareth Southgate says England players "created their own story and made history" by beating Colombia 4-3 on penalties to set up a FIFA World Cup quarter‑final clash against Sweden.
This is England’s first shootout victory in World Cup history after defeats in 1990, 1998 and 2006.
In 1990, England lost to Germany 4-3 on penalties in the semi-final, in 1998, England lost to Argentina 4-3 on penalties in the Round of 16 while in 2006 they lost to Portugal 3-1 on penalties in the quarter-finals.
The last time England played in a World Cup quarter-final was in 2006 against Portugal.
They were thrashed 4-1 by Germany in 2010 in the Round of 16 while in 2014 they failed to qualify from their group as they finished last.
Since the World Cup began in 1930, England have won the title once in 1966 when they beat Germany 4-2 after extra time.
England will play Sweden at 2am Sunday in their quarter-final match.
In other quarter-finals, France will play Uruguay at 2am Saturday, Brazil will play Belgium at 6am Saturday while hosts Russia will play Croatia at 6am Sunday.
