A former proposed candidate of the National Federation Party has been charged with one count of rape and will appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
It is alleged that the man raped a 53-year-old woman in Nasinu last Thursday night.
Police say it is alleged that the man and woman are family friends and he approached the woman if he could spend the night at her Nasinu home as he was too tired after a wedding and could not go back home.
The man allegedly started knocking on the woman’s bedroom door in the middle of the night and then forcefully got into the room. He then allegedly raped the woman.
Police say the woman managed to free herself and then locked herself up in the bathroom.
Police were then called to the house.
NFP Leader, Professor Biman Prasad says the proposed candidate resigned after the alleged incident and his resignation has been accepted by NFP.
