Major works on improving drainage system on Koronivia Road in Nausori has commenced.
The road which is used by over 4,000 residents of Koronivia, Nakaikogo and Lokia gets easily flooded during continuous heavy downpour and also cuts access to thousands of residents.
The $146,964 worth of works which was commissioned last night in Koronivia by Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy includes clearing of existing water channels to remove debris and rubbish.
New water channels will also be constructed connecting to the existing drainage system to cater for high rainfall intensity.
New culverts and head-walls will also be constructed to convey water across the road and control erosion.
Dr Reddy also highlighted to residents of Koronivia that his Ministry's budget has been increased from $29 million to $69 million and the volume of work carried out by their staff will also increase in the new financial year.
He says Nakaikogo Primary School is situated just two metres away from the Toga river and immediate action is required to prevent further soil erosion and sinking of school property into the river.
He has urged residents to look after the new infrastructure and refrain from throwing rubbish in drains and rivers.
