The former National Federation Party proposed candidate who is charged with one count of rape has been granted bail by High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar.

Justice Goundar while granting the 66‑year‑old’s bail said he will be released on strict bail conditions.

Justice Goundar said that the 66‑year‑old while on bail is to reside in Nadi and report to the Nadi Police Station every Friday.

The man who is a dentist by profession has been ordered not to interfere with the complainant or witnesses in the case directly or indirectly while on bail.

The matter has been adjourned for plea on the 11th of September at 9.30am.

It is alleged that the man raped his 53‑year‑old sister‑in‑law in Nasinu on the 28th of last month.

It is alleged that the man approached the woman and asked if he could spend the night at her Nasinu home as he was too tired after a wedding and could not go back home.

The man allegedly started knocking on the woman’s bedroom door in the middle of the night and then forcefully got into the room.

He then allegedly raped the woman.

The woman managed to free herself and then locked the man up in the bathroom.

Police were then called to the house.
