The Fijian Commerce and Employers Federation is sounding the alarm on the excessive use of social media in workplaces in Fiji saying that all Fijian businesses must take action now.

CEO Nesbitt Hazelman says it is a real issue in terms of productivity as at least up to a third of the hours of work are taken up by social media use.

Today, Facebook and Instagram announced they are releasing a new tool to limit how much time people spend on their apps.

The new features which will be out in the coming weeks will include an activity dashboard that shows how long you're spending on Facebook or Instagram and a daily reminder for when you're hitting your total time for the day and a way to tune out notifications.

Hazelman says businesses should make those tough decisions and explore protocols about social media use in the workplace.

Some companies already have policies where employees are not allowed to publicly post about the companies internal dealings on social media and limited use of social media during working hours.
