I don’t think of democracy as a threat to indigenous rights.

This was the answer given by Youth representative Jope Tarai who was a panelist at the CCF Forum on the Role of Elections In Democracy at the University of the South Pacific.

Tarai gave this answer in reply to a question asked by Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of Journalism at USP, Dr Shailendra Singh on whether democracy is a threat to indigenous rights.

Tarai further said that undemocratic personalities and individuals who mask themselves as part of whatever they choose to call a democracy are a threat not only to indigenous rights but to everyone’s rights.
