Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger got his wish ‑ Canterbury outside back Josh McKay is sticking around.
McKay, who made two appearances during his rookie season, has inked a two‑year deal with the Dunedin‑based franchise.
Mauger recently told Stuff retaining the 20‑year‑old was a priority, hailing his work ethic and predicting a bright future for the former Christchurch Boys' High School pupil.
McKay has been signed predominantly as a fullback, and Mauger has made it clear he doesn't see the speedster as a first‑five eighth option, despite him shining as a pivot for Christchurch Boys'.
In the meantime, McKay is eyeing another NPC title with Canterbury, winners nine of the past 10 seasons.
Fellow Highlander Luke Whitelock will also make his first appearance for Canterbury this season tomorrow, having been released by the All Blacks during their Rugby Championship break.
