All Black pair Julian Savea and Liam Messam have made their first appearances with Toulon in the Top 14 in France.

Messam started the game at openside whilst Savea came off the bench to play for twenty‑minutes on the left wing.

Messam offered a few strong carries, dominating his opponent whilst Savea had limited touches but did spark a break down the left‑hand side with another ex‑All Black Malakai Fekitoa.

Savea is expected to find his way into the starting lineup on a more regular basis as the season goes on.

Toulon went with an interesting backline using Anthony Belleau at 12 in partnership with Josua Tuisova in the midfield, pushing Fekitoa to the wing.

Belleau and Tuisova combined to score Toulon’s only try in the 20‑10 loss to Pau.
