Suva High Court Judge Justice Vinsent Perera has sentenced Sangeeta Devi to 3 years one month imprisonment for the manslaughter of her new born baby.
Devi was convicted for causing the death of her newborn by not seeking medical help during delivery.
The newborn had died of excessive blood loss due to his umblical cord not being clamped.
Devi had given birth to the baby on 9th January 2016 at her home in Khalsa Road and wrapped him in a bedsheet and put him in the bathroom.
Justice Perera told Devi that there was no evidence that she used violence on the baby but she caused the death of a human being at its most vulnerable stage of life.
Her non parole has been set for 1 year 10 months.
