145 inmates from the province of Lomaiviti are currently serving time in Corrections facilities around Fiji.

Speaking at the Fiji Corrections Service Lomaiviti Symposium at Studio 6, Supervisor Central and Eastern divisions SSP Salote Naulivou Panapasa said that Lomaiviti inmates represent 6% of the total number of inmates and from the 145 Lomaiviti inmates; 97 are convicted prisoners while 48 are serving time at remand centers.

Panapasa said with the 97 convicted inmates; 46% are between the ages of 16-30.

She also that the reoffending rate for the province of Lomaiviti is very low with only 3 inmates coming back with new cases such as aggravated robbery, burglary, theft and robbery.

Chairman for Lomaiviti Provincial Council Joji Qaranivalu says it is the responsibility of the vanua to enlighten their people on any matters that might lead them to ruin.

He says they will be working together with the Fiji Corrections Service to reduce the number of people from Lomaiviti in prison and also educate communities on the acceptance of ex-offenders.
