A total of $1.82 million worth of farming equipment and its implements have been provided to the Fijian government by the Government of Japan.
The equipment includes 4 excavators, nine tractors and 20 chainsaws that will be utilized by the Ministry of Waterways.
Permanent Secretary to the Office of the Prime Minister Yogesh Karan says the machines will be used to assist sugar and rice farmers in Fiji, in ensuring proper drainage for their farms and communities.
Karan says it will also provide support to other ministries that require its services especially in the disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
Japanese Ambassador to Fiji Masahiro Omura says the threat of natural disasters has been and will be increasing due to climate change, therefore strengthening of disaster preparedness and response is crucial in saving lives and minimizing risks associated with disasters.
