The Online Safety Act comes into effect from today with the aim to promote responsible behavior and online safety.
Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum earlier highlighted that Fiji has over half a million Facebook users and accessibility to Facebook is quite liberal and there are serious concerns on the misuse of social media in the country.
He also highlighted that the Online Safety Act will also promote a safe online culture and environment that will address cyber bullying, cyber stalking, internet trolling and exposure to offensive or harmful content particularly in respect of children.
The Attorney General says that people need to read the law and become aware of the Act.
Meanwhile, former Miss South Pacific Miss Fiji, Miss Hibiscus and Fiji First Party supporter Anne Dunn Baleilevuka has been appointed as the Commissioner of the Online Safety Commission.
Baleilevuka who is a lawyer and a graduate of USP will take the lead role in the monitoring of the use of social media and she says that there is an intense platform of people being able to speak or do things online and not having any sort of repercussion for their actions.
Baleilevuka says the Commission will be there to assist people.
$300,000 was allocated to the Commission in the 2018‑2019 National Budget.
