Government has spent over $240 million for rehabilitation works after 434 schools sustained various levels of damage from Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The Minister for Education Rosy Akbar highlighted this while commissioning the new school block in Tavua College as part of the Ministry’s Tropical Cyclone Winston Rehabilitation Programme.

Akbar also highlighted that 65% of Primary Schools, 20% of Early childhood Education Centres and 15% of secondary schools in the Ba/Tavua Education District sustained major damages.

She says the rebuilding of the two classrooms and the staffroom took almost 7 months and cost around $236,530.

The Education Minister also highlighted the progress into the 3rd year post TC Winston where a significant amount of work has been done.

Akbar adds that 125 schools are currently receiving minor upgrade works managed by the Education Ministry.

She says that to date over 400 new buildings have been constructed and 1,350 buildings upgraded.

The Minister also highlighted Construction Implementation Unit from the Ministry of Economy is managing 206 projects with the tender for 4 projects yet to be finalised.

Akbar also stressed that the Ministry is working on plans to strengthen its capacity in improving disaster preparedness and response strategies.
