Parliament has passed High Court Amendment Act that will remove the stated figures in respect to the number of High Court Judges that Fiji should have at any given time.

The bill was passed unanimously.

There are currently 25 High Court Judges in the country.

While speaking on the amendment, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the Magistrates Court Act does not have a stipulated number as to how many Magistrates should be appointed within the judicial system.

SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula paid tribute to the retiring Chief Justice, Anthony Gates and added that he feels the incoming Acting Chief Justice Kamal Kumar will look after the Judiciary well.

Nawaikula also stated that the current legal framework for the appointment of judges is not ideal and there is room for improvement and has asked government to look into that so that the best candidates are appointed as judicial officers.

He went on to claim that the Fiji Law Society and the local legal and judicial fraternity was emasculated and decimated since the 2006 take over.

In his response to Nawaikula, Sayed-Khaiyum shared what had happened during the 1987 coup.
