An increasing number of people are enjoying travelling and to make tourism sustainable, we must protect the environment, cultural heritage, and communities through appropriate policies and regulations.
This was highlighted by the ADB President, Takehiko Nakao while making his closing remarks at the 52nd Asian Development Bank Board of Governors Annual Meeting.
He also highlighted that about 350 million international tourists arrived in Asia and Pacific countries last year, and this number has more than doubled since 2005.
Nakao also touched on regional economies adding that the regional economy has been steady and some countries are even accelerating, supported by consumption and investment.
He adds that Fiji and other member countries’ economies are also promoted by innovation and technological development in the region.
Attorney‑General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum who is the Chair of the ADB Board of Governors says this meeting has for the first time allowed the world to come to the Pacific and more specifically showcase what Fiji has to offer.
Sayed‑Khaiyum adds too often Pacific Islanders have traveled the world for events like this but now it’s a different story.
Sayed-Khaiyum also handed over the baton to South Korea the hosts of the 53rd ADB conference 2020.
The Baton was handed over to the Republic of Korea Deputy Prime Minister Nam‑ki Hong.
