Solving the squatter and housing problem in the country is not a quick fix.

Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar stated this in parliament during the debate on the motion to review the report on the Ministry of Local Government, Urban Development, Housing and Environment’s 2012, 2013 and 2014 reports.

Kumar says in 2003, squatter settlements increased by 70 percent because of the expiry of cane leases.

She says there are more than 250 squatter settlements throughout the country.

The Minister says that some people living in squatter settlements are fighting amongst themselves and this delays projects that the government wants to proceed with in some areas.
