A man has been sentenced to 14 years and 1 month imprisonment for raping his niece by the Labasa High Court.
The maximum penalty for rape under the Crimes Act is life imprisonment.
At the time of the incident, the man was 42 years while the complainant was 16 years.
While sentencing the man, Judge, Justice Thushara Rajasinghe says the complainant has been going through an adverse emotional and psychological trauma due to this incident adding her life style has adversely changed after this incident.
Justice Rajasinghe told the man he blatantly breached the trust that the complainant reposed in him as the uncle.
The judge added the man breached the trust of his own brother, the father of the complainant.
The judge says the complainant explained in her evidence that she treated the accused as her father.
He says she thought that the man was asking about her relationship with the boyfriend in order to advise her about such matter.
A non parole period of 12 years and 1 month has been set
