A former Technician at the Judicial Department who was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment received a suspended sentence of two years in the Suva Magistrates Court today.

Shannon Shahil Chand was charged by FICAC and convicted of abuse of office but acquitted of general dishonesty obtaining a gain in May this year.

In delivering his sentence, Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili says that this was a crime of opportunity, a one off offending and that he did not influence or pressure any other person to offend although he was motivated by personal gain to obtain a mobile phone.

The court found that since the Chand is young, a first offender and that there was minimum damage sustained by the Department, it was appropriate to fully suspend the sentence for two years.

Chand was found to have abused the authority of his office by acquiring Samsung mobile devices for his personal use through the Vodafone subsidy given to the High Court of Fiji.
