Goundar Shipping had one year to comply with the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji safe ships management system regulations but they did not do this, and that is why they have been told to stop operating their vessels.
This has been highlighted by MSAF’s Acting CEO, Captain Philip Hill at Kadavu House today.
He says the regulations came into force in 2014 and MSAF started implementing these regulations last July.
Hill says Goundar Shipping had a lot of time to produce their documents.
He also says MSAF had ship captains, crews from shipping companies on training and awareness with these regulations and that this is first phase of the implementation where they had looked into ships above 50 metres mainly on commercial operation for passenger and cargo.
14 shipping companies have complied with the regulations and they have been issued interim certificates.
MSAF will conduct three monthly audits to ensure that all ships are following the safe ships management system regulations.
Goundar Shipping will comment later.
