24-year-old Steven Beverly who was charged with theft and aggravated burglary has been sentenced to 2 years, 4 months and 17 days imprisonment.
It was heard in court that Beverly entered a shop in Nasinu and stole assorted items worth about $1346.37.
While sentencing the man, Judge, Justice Vinsent Perera says the interests of justice demand a deterrent punishment to be given in this type of cases.
He says in his view, undue leniency when it comes to punishing offenders who commit burglary or aggravated burglary, tend to contribute for burglary to remain as the most prevalent offence in Fiji and would therefore lead to an erosion of the confidence reposed by the people in the rule of law.
A non parole period of 14 months and 17 days has been set.
