It was a joyous moment for Esita Lewaivalu of Rakiraki as she received her wheelchair from the Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.
Lewaivalu was in her house with her two daughters when it was blown away by the destructive winds of Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016 making them fall into a valley.
One of her daughters Katarina Bubu crawled fifty feet to the village to notify villagers who came to their rescue and pulled Lewaivalu out.
Her other daughter unfortunately did not survive.
Since then Lewaivalu has had difficulty in walking as she feels numb from the waist down after sustaining injuries to her collar bone.
While presenting the wheel chair, Dr Waqainabete said the Ministry always responds to such calls from the people as they are duty bound to make health services readily available to all Fijians.
He added this also ties in well with their commitment to leave no one behind.
Meanwhile, Lewaivalu daughter Katarina, has been nominated for the biennial Fiji Children’s Award for her act of bravery in saving the life of her mother.
She will be presented the award on the 26th of this month at Nailuva Primary School in Rakiraki.
