Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa says speaking out against crime or injustice is a small act of charity that could save lives.
She says raising the alarm when you witness domestic violence; informing authorities when you see a child being abused; stopping someone from littering; being there for someone who is emotionally disturbed or getting help for someone who is depressed or simply sharing are small acts of charity that could save someone’s life.
The Minister made these comments at the opening ceremony of the Bula Festival in Nadi last night.
She also stated that issues such as discrimination, abuse, neglect for the elder, children and people living with disabilities, homelessness, gender based violence, suicide and mental health problems are a huge concern for Fijians.
She said they must act now and they must change for the better.
The theme for this year’s Bula Festival is “Hearts of Charity” where 10 women will be competing to be crowned Miss Bula.
