The Fiji Cancer Society is assisting a total of 320 registered patients including patients who are being cared for at home besides those who are regularly required to attend clinics.

This has been confirmed by an Officer of the Fiji Cancer Society, Grace Tuivakasiga while speaking during the Jack’s of Fiji Pinktober Morning Tea.

Tuivakasiga says there were 63 new breast cancer patients reported last year and this figure increased to 65 new registered patients this year which includes one male breast cancer case.

She says last year they raised $60,000 and this year they are anticipating to raise $80,000.

Tuivakasiga says cancer is the third leading cause of death in Fiji and our lifestyle is the contributing factors.

She says that the number of people diagnosed with breast cancer is increasing every year.

While speaking at the event, Minister for Health Doctor Ifereimi Waqainabete says throughout the three main hospitals in Fiji they have a treatment of cancer.

Waqainabete says there is also chemotherapy available locally and though they might not have radiotherapy, a lot of cancers are amenable with surgery and chemotherapy.

Waqainabete says they have provisions in place for Fijians who need cancer treatment that we don’t have locally.

He says they support through the government allocation of the overseas treatment scheme to be able to have adequate treatment provided for them overseas.

He says that there are other support systems that are provided by the Fiji Cancer Society.
