The Consumer Council of Fiji has found that some supermarkets were keeping defrosted and discoloured meat in the storage freezers after Tropical Cyclone Sarai.
The Council says it is warning supermarkets, butcheries and food retailers to destroy food items and meat that have become unsafe for human consumption.
They say it will not hesitate to report these traders to the Food Safety Unit under the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission.
The Council is also warning traders to refrain from selling food and other perishable items which have gone bad due to the power outage in most parts of Viti Levu.
Consumers are advised to report any incidents to the Council on the National Consumer Helpline toll-free number 155.
