Mate Ma’a Tonga coach Kristian Wolf says former Wallabies star, Israel Folau will be considered for Tongan selection if he performs well for the Catalan Dragons in the Super League competition.
The former Wallabies fullback, has not played any rugby since being sacked by Rugby Australia for making homophobic comments on social media, and now has signed a one-year contract with the Super League club, the Catalan Dragons.
Folau is due to arrive in France next week, and the 30-year-old could make his debut for the Dragons against Wakefield in round two of competition.
Woolf says Folau is passionate about his Tongan heritage and any meetings that he has had with him have really gone well.
He says if he is playing footy than he will be considered along with everyone else and he will only be picked if he performs well, not because of who he is.
Tonga, who beat Australia and Great Britain last year, are scheduled to meet New Zealand and Fiji in the Oceania Cup later this year, with dates and venues yet to be confirmed for the tournament.
