South Africa's inspirational Rugby World Cup captain Siya Kolisi is out of Super Rugby for about six weeks after suffering a knee injury in their 27-0 victory over the Hurricanes last week.

Kolisi was forced off the field after 25 minutes of the first half, and scans have revealed a Grade 2 tear of the medial ligament in his left knee, meaning that he will be on the sidelines for a lengthy spell.

Kolisi's knee collapsed in the tackle of Hurricanes hooker Ricky Riccitelli as he was hit low and slightly late after offloading a pass.

Kolisi battled a knee problem last season but recovered in time to lead the Springboks to their third World Cup title in Japan last year.

Steven Kitshoff is tipped to take over the captaincy from Kolisi.

The Stormers will play the Bulls at 3.15am Sunday.
