Expect a wet weekend.

The Nadi Weather Office said that a trough of low pressure remains slow moving to the south of Fiji which is why associated cloud and rain is affecting most parts of the group.

A duty forecaster said that cloudy periods with some showers with heavy rain at times and possible thunderstorms will be experienced mostly in most parts of Viti Levu, Kadavu, Southern Lau and Lomaiviti.

He said heavy rain may cause flash flooding of low lying areas and people living in such areas need to take precautionary measures.

Rain is expected to ease by Sunday evening.

The weather office is calling on mariners to be very careful when going out to sea which will rough at times.

Meanwhile, the Vanua Levu weather surveillance radar, situated on Vatudamu Hill started operating from today.

Near real time imagery of rain activity over or approaching the Northern Division can now be visible to forecasters and the general public.

Apart from rain activity detection, forecasters can now accurately observe, monitor and provide timely and quality forecasts and warnings on severe weather systems, especially tropical cyclones, approaching Fiji from the North and/or developing over or near the Northern Division.
