Members of the public can only slaughter cows if they get the approval from the Agriculture Ministry.

Permanent Secretary Colonel Mason Smith said they have to work in partnership with livestock industry to ensure there is an increase in the number of breeders in the country.

Visits are also being done to butchers and other slaughter facilities to ensure there is no bush slaughter taking place around the country.

His comment comes after Fiji Dairy Limited said a decrease in supply of milk from local farmers has led to the shortage of Rewa Life milk.
