A 45-year-old taxi driver was assaulted by a man last night after he refused to give him money and cigarette.

Salen Ram told Fijivillage that he had dropped off a passenger at Charles street in Toorak around 8pm when the man approached him asking for money and cigarette.

In his reply, the taxi driver told the man that he does not have money or cigarette.

The man punched the taxi driver and damaged his windscreen with a stone.

Our reporter at the scene witnessed the incident, he saw the man assault anyone who tried to get ahold of the man including an officer from the Toorak Police Post and fled afterward.

It is unclear at this stage whether the man has been arrested.

The driver has lodged a complaint at the Toorak Police Post and we are still waiting for information from Police.
